Having a ‘Jolly Good’ time to raise money for charity

Having a ‘Jolly Good’ time to raise money for charity

Now not many people would describe a 50 mile cycle ride as a jolly good time, but Mark Hughes, managing director of Jolly Good Vehicle Rentals, would disagree. His brainchild last year was to arrange a charity cycle ride to raise funds for local charities. The ‘Le Tour de Jolly’ was launched and around 100 participants raised £10,000 which was donated to local causes, including Christmas presents for poorly children, a dementia charity and playground equipment. A repeat event is set for Sunday, 13th September with the start and finish at the Jolly Good Head Office in Wrexham.

Mark started the Jolly Good business seven years ago with just six Vauxhall Vivaro vans from Shropshire based automotive company Greenhous. Mark elaborates: “We have expanded quickly and now have 1500 vehicles, from cars to 7.5 tonne DAF trucks, available from our ten branches across North Wales, Shropshire and the Midlands.  We have built a great relationship with Greenhous and they provide excellent service, and they have just received an order from us for 40 new T6 VW Transporters.”

Working with your community is a major priority for Mark and his team as he explains: “I believe in giving something back to the community which supports our business.  We have raised over £100,000 in recent years from cycle rides to Paris, raft races and other activities.  ‘Le Tour de Jolly’ is a fun ride open to anyone.  All we ask is that riders raise £100 towards the total.

“Cycling is the new golf and it is growing in popularity.  We hope to have over one hundred riders join us, setting off in small groups, and hopefully all will make it at least as far as the first pit stop at the Ice Cream factory in Tattenhall!

“Greenhous have kindly said they will have a team entering and I would like to invite other businesses to join in or just as individuals.  It is all for a great cause supporting local needs.”

Where does the catchy ‘Jolly Good’ brand name come from? Well Mark was given the nickname ‘Jolly’ by friends and he happened to hear newscaster, Trevor McDonald, sign off wishing listeners “A jolly good night”, and so the ‘Jolly Good’ brand was launched.

It is not too late to sign up for ‘Le Tour de Jolly’. Contact ‘Jolly’ Hughes at bookings@jollygroup.co.uk or telephone 01978 800802.
