Tom Hill, aged 22, is a Level 3 Apprentice at Greenhous Commercials in Shrewsbury working mainly on DAF trucks. Following on from his success as Year 1 DAF Apprentice of the Year and as a Year 2 finalist, Tom has been selected for the Year 3 DAF Apprentice of the Year finals at the end of October.

As a result of his impressive progress, Tom has been selected to take part in the National Finals of World Skills UK in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at the NEC in Birmingham. Tom will have his skills tested in the Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3, Heavy Vehicle Level 3 category.  He will be competing against other selected Level 3 apprentices from businesses throughout the UK.

Motor mechanics are in Tom’s blood.  His father is an agricultural contractor used to the repair and maintenance of tractors and other agricultural machinery.  From the age of 9 Tom started helping his father and the experience fired his ambition to follow a career as a mechanic. Tom worked for 4 years with motorcycles, following his interest in MotoCross and also enjoyed taking cars apart and putting them back together again.

Tom, who lives in Shrewsbury, was attracted by the challenge of working on trucks, finding the work with the larger scale components more interesting. He enjoys ‘getting his hands dirty’ especially being interested in the operation of engines and gearboxes.  Tom enjoys the physical and practical nature of the work whilst acknowledging the importance that new technologies and the significance computer based diagnostics play in today’s servicing world.

Whilst looking forward to finishing his apprenticeship, Tom realises that he has plenty more training ahead of him if he is to achieve his ambition of becoming a Master Technician.  Martin Hill, Service Manager at DAF Commercials Shrewsbury, is delighted with the progress that Tom has made during his apprenticeship saying: “Tom has excelled in his studies and his practical expertise has flourished here.  To be a finalist for the DAF Apprenticeship of the Year three times is a great testament to his skill levels and his determination to be the best he can achieve. We are proud of his commitment to the company and he is setting the standards for other apprentices following behind him in this innovative world of truck development.”
