Brakes are key to your driving safety, but we are often asked questions about brakes feeling spongy, taking longer to stop or even grinding noise from the front or rear brakes. You and your Renault car or van are welcome to visit Greenhous Renault for a free brake safety check at any time if you are concerned with your Renault car or van brakes or braking performance.
One of our service advisors will make a visual check of your brake discs and pads every time your Renault car or van comes to our workshop for servicing, MOT, repair, warranty or diagnostic work. On a service we also measure the actual thickness of the brake disc and brake pads and compare that to the Renault minimum thickness standard to advise you on wear and replacement interval to keep you safe on the road. We also check the condition of your brake fluid and for any leaks from a brake hoses, and condition of handbrake cables – all for your peace of mind.
It’s important to change brake pads when they are near their minimum thickness to avoid unexpected brake failure. Replacing your brake pads before they completely wear to the metal brake pad backing extends the life of your brake disc, saves you money in the long run and keeps you safe on the road.
We have worked hard with Renault to offer great value for money, peace of mind and reassurance for braking safety and resale value of your Renault car or van.

Brake discs are wearing parts, so need to be checked for thickness and surface condition and are generally replaced every second or third time the brake pads are replaced, but can be damaged by worn out brake pads. Brake discs are always replaced in pairs to provide equal stopping performance on both sides of your vehicle. Brake pads must always be changed when brake discs are replaced to ensure a good “bite” – as brake pads will be worn or grooved by the previous set of brake discs, which is why we have a fixed price offer for brake pads and discs.
Brake pads are in direct contact with the brake discs and during braking the brake pad may reach temperatures of more than 800°C. Their quality is therefore essential, so always choose genuine Renault brake pads and discs fitted by a Renault trained technician.
Renault approved brake pads can resist high temperatures, and give a good “bite” on the brake disc which ultimately slows and stops your car or loaded van. How long a brake pad lasts depends on the type of vehicle, the type of journeys made and the driving style. Brake pads must therefore be checked regularly. Renault vans and cars are always welcome at Greenhous for a free brake check – while you use our Wi-Fi and enjoy a tea or coffee.
Drum brakes are generally mounted on the rear wheels. When the driver presses the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure is applied to the pistons in the wheel cylinders. The rear brake drums wear with the friction applied by the shoes, so that they end up scored or gouged, but generally they can be rectified. Drum are fitted to some Twingo and Clio models.
Brake fluid transfers the mechanical force applied from the brake pedal to the brake pistons. The pressure of the brake fluid moves the hydraulic pistons that push the brake pads against the discs. Working in a closed circuit, the brake fluid needs to be incompressible while resisting the build-up of heat during braking so as to not boil. Brake fluid also absorbs water, from humidity present in the air. The amount of water in brake fluid must never exceed 3.5%. It is very important the right brake fluid is used, and the system properly bled and checked for leaks. Brake fluid requires changing every 4 years on Renault cars and vans. There are different types available which must not be mixed – so always trust Greenhous Renault to replace your brake fluid. At Greenhous Renault we have a fixed price for Brake Fluid of just £39.
