What is the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme enables people to lease a new car by using their government-funded mobility allowances. This gives them the freedom to get to work or college, meet up with friends, enjoy a day trip out with their families, attend a medical appointment – in short, to enjoy the freedom and independence that so many of us take for granted.

In fact, since the Scheme was set up in 1978, Motability has helped over 3 million people get mobile with a new vehicle.

Who are Motability?

There are two organisations which work closely together to deliver the Motability Scheme. They are Motability, a registered charity, responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the Motability Scheme, and Motability Operations Ltd, a private company that operates the Scheme under contract to Motability.

Motability is a national charity set up at the initiative of the Government, with all party support, in 1977 and incorporated by Royal Charter. There objective is to help disabled people with their personal mobility.

They direct and oversee the Motability Scheme, administered by Motability Operations, which includes the Car Scheme and the Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme.

They manage the Government’s Specialised Vehicles Fund, specifically to help people who need a heavily adapted car.

They raise money for our own Charitable Grants Programme to provide additional financial help to those people whose allowance does not cover the cost of the mobility solution they need.

Since 1978, Motability Operations has been responsible for the finance, administration and maintenance of the Car Scheme and the Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme. They are owned by the UK's four major banks - Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS.

When you lease a car through Motability, all or part of your mobility allowance is paid directly to Motability Operations for the length of the agreement.

They aim to provide a wide range of affordable vehicles to meet our customers' disability needs.

How it works

If you receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP), the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. The Motability Scheme enables people to lease a new car, by exchanging their Government funded mobility allowance.

To lease a car through Motability, you must have at least 12 months award remaining. Only the higher or enhanced rate of the mobility allowance is used. Please note that the Attendance Allowance can’t be used to lease a car through Motability.

If you need a specific car because of your disability and you are unable to afford the Advance Payment required, or if you need essential adaptations which can sometimes cost more, Motability may be able to provide financial help through the provision of a grant.

Financial help is only awarded towards the least expensive solution that meets your mobility needs and you should also expect to contribute as much as you can afford.

One of the common misconceptions regarding eligibility for the Scheme is that there is an upper age limit, this is not necessarily the case. In fact we have a large proportion of our customers who are aged over 65. As long as you were awarded your relevant allowance before the age of 65 then you are likely to be eligible for the scheme.

We provide the vehicle and the support you need so you can simply enjoy worry-free mobility.

As part of our worry-free package, you can receive:

In essence once you have taken delivery of your new car, all you need is to add fuel with no additional cost outlay and enjoy the drive and freedom that this will bring to you.
