Gina Hughes has had a career in the industry that started 30 years ago as service advisor at the W. A. Lewis Volvo dealership on Featherbed Lane. Now she finds herself as the Health and Safety Co-ordinator for the Retail and PDI Centres for the Greenhous Group. It is a sizeable task looking after the health and safety of hundreds of employees, and of course the general public who visit the Greenhous sites.

Following maternity leave after having her second son, Gina returned to Volvo in a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) role, and also gained experience in all departments which led to her becoming  Standards Co-ordinator ensuring adherence to British Standards 5750 quality management, which is now called ISO9001.  When new Health and Safety legislation came in (1999), along with environmental issues, these were bolted on to her job role.  To meet the requirements of the role she became an Internal Auditor for IS09001 gaining a Business Improvement Auditor qualification.

Gina built up a positive Health and Safety culture at the company, creating processes and training opportunities and in 2004 completed NEBOSH qualification. At the time Greenhous acquired the W.A. Lewis dealerships Gina was the Standards Manager leading a centralised warranty team for several vehicle franchises plus monitoring Motability Standards, assisting with Franchise Standards, Environmental contracts and as a Health & Safety Representative.

Gina is delighted to be leading the H and S development for Greenhous explaining that for the first quarter all sites were being audited for business risk and fire safety with reports and action plans being produced.  Her meticulous approach will see a review of risk assessments for example in higher risk areas such as driving.

Gina says: “My goal is to have a positive H and S culture across Greenhous.  We must adhere to regulatory requirements to ensure our environment is safe for all.  People are then happier in the work place, absenteeism is reduced and staff are confident to report issues that need addressing.  H and S being everyone’s responsibility.”

With a plan in progress, Gina will work to initiate management training on risk assessments, as well as linking with the Human Resources Department on the review of H and S documentation, making it more user-friendly. This is displayed on the employee portal, Mercury. Training for Fire Marshalls and First aiders will also come under Gina’s scrutiny. Regular review of all policies and procedures whilst a lengthy undertaking, is important for Greenhous and supports the H and S information given at new employee induction.

When not working Gina spends time at cottage she recently bought in Harlech. She is a Reiki Master and a qualified Life Coach encouraging people how to achieve goals. She also wishes to study for a qualification in Astrological studies.
