Gareth got hooked on the sport whilst trying it out with his younger brother. He has now been drifting for six and a half years. His progress through the ranks was swift and midway through the 2012 season he was promoted from the semi-pro level to the professional ranks, picking up the Most Improved Driver of the Year title that season.
Originally from Cumbria, and now living in Short Heath, Willenhall, Gareth trained as an HGV technician whilst he spent 6 years in the Army. He racked up a further experience with 9 years at another truck dealership where he qualified to provide the DAF Aid service to customers.
Most racing is done on specially designed courses on race tracks or on large tarmac areas. Gareth has been racing a Nissan 200SX S14 with a 2 litre Turbo SR20 engine putting out 500 BHP which he has developed and maintained.
The drivers are judged on their ability to accurately pilot their rear wheel powered vehicles through the course with emphasis on speed, line and angle of drifting through certain points on the course. Once through individual qualifying, they race against another driver for two races where one chases the other mirroring the moves without colliding.
Gareth has raced all over the UK including Silverstone, Castle Coombe, the Teeside Autodrome, Anglesey and Scotland. He has also competed in France. He is taking this season out of competition to spend time building his new car. It is a Nissan 200SX S15 fitted with a 3 litre, straight 6, Toyota Supra 2JZ engine which will release 700 BHP. Once built Gareth will be back on track aiming to make his mark in the British Drifting Championships once again.
