A number of Greenhous staff from various dealerships have been playing 5 a side football at the Wilfred Owen School Astro pitch in Shrewsbury for some time. From this regular event Richard Bennett and Tom Hynes decided it would be a good idea to throw the gauntlet down and challenge Shawbury United Veterans to a friendly match.
Players were drawn from the Monday night group and other members of staff from Greenhous sites in the Shrewsbury area. The match was played on the pitch just past the RAF Shawbury Base’s main gate on the right hand side. After the game Shawbury Veterans put food on for both teams in the Elephant and Castle pub in the middle of Shawbury.
The Greenhous squad included the following talented footballers: Neil McKenzie, Richard Bennett, Kieran Griffin, Sam Buckley, Lee Brown, Tom Hynes, Jamie Houghton, Richard Haigh, Keith Oakes, Murray Jones, Mike Davies plus two players from outside of the company.
Tom Hynes gives his match report: “The score was 8-3 to them, but it was 2-2 until about three quarters of the way through the match. They had a bigger squad and younger legs. So when they piled forward we struggled to contain them, plus we only had two subs they had about eight! However the feedback was great, apparently we did really well considering we have never played 11 aside as a team and they play week in week out. So what we are going to do is try and arrange a game each month against them or other teams if we can find them and a pitch. But overall everyone enjoyed it as far as I’m aware.”
