Clive Barnfield and Carwyn Jones, who work out of the Greenhous High Ercall Fleet Centre, are two such members of the local Winkle Club. Carwyn explains the origins of the club: “It is a group that started with the fisherman of Portsmouth I believe, but has spread to pockets across the country. We as a group donate our own time and money to gathering funds throughout the year which we then donate to a local charity. This year we're supporting the Midlands Air Ambulance. We normally raise around £1,000.
“The reason it is the Winkle Club is that each member carries with them a winkle shell at all times, otherwise if challenged and they are without the shell they are fined. We also have a ’Swear Box’ that contributes quite a lot to the fund! Those fines go towards the charity they have nominated for that year.”
Clive and Carwyn are part of a nine strong local Winkle Club and they have contributed donations to charities such as the Severn Hospice, Help4Heroes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and rugby charities. Just recently they held a Summer Ball at the All Nations pub at Madeley in Telford and managed to raise just over £1000 from the raffle, for which they are very grateful.
The group are involved in putting on a Carol Concert at the Black Boy pub in Bridgnorth at Christmas with a brass band attending. There will be a Christmas raffle and Carwyn and Clive are eager to receive raffle prizes from any source.
The Shropshire Winkle Club are often going on tour to follow their love of Rugby including trips to all of the major international grounds in Europe, including Twickenham, Murrayfield, Cardiff, Croke Park in Dublin, Paris and Rome.
There are bound to be some very well-travelled winkle shells among them!
