At the hospital, a cheque for a massive £10,000 was handed over to Irene Axon, Senior Community Fundraising Manager for Alder Hey. This was the accumulation of a series of charitable activities and events that Tristan and his wife Rachel have organised over the past year in aid of the Layla Jane Pitt Remembrance Trust.
Alder Hey is the hospital who looked after the family 10 years ago when their daughter Layla died suddenly at the age of 11. The family have been raising funds through the Remembrance Trust to honour Layla and help others on her behalf since then.
Tristan explained: “When we entered the hospital with Layla there were open wards and bays separated by curtains and privacy was very limited. Rachel and I decided to dedicate fundraising to help provide for family rooms where there would be more comfort and peace for children and families at such difficult times. We have sponsored two of these rooms which include a pull out bed and full ensuite facilities so parents can remain with their child at all times, whether they are staying for just a short time in the hospital or whether they are there to spend their final moments as a family.
“I teamed up with 3 old friends from Renault in Telford and we spent 6 hours making the journey, with just over 4 hours in the saddle. We received a very warm welcome from Irene at the hospital which included a tour of the developing facilities there. The £10,000 is being donated to assist with new laboratory and research facilities at the hospital which will hopefully help to save the lives of many, many children in the future.
“The Layla Jane Pitt Remembrance Trust has raised over £20,000 over the years and we recently delivered, as part of a cycle ride of course, a cheque for £5,000 to the Hope House Children’s Hospice in Oswestry to pay for a mobile end of life unit so families can spend their final precious time with their child in the privacy of their home. Sadly, the outcome cannot be changed for so many children but the amazing staff at Hope House have explained what a huge difference this will make and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has helped raise funds.
“We have an annual charity cycle ride from Telford to Porthmadog which will take place again next August and our next Charity Ball will be on the 17th November 2018 at the Patshull Park Hotel. Tickets are available at £40 per person and this includes a 4 course meal and entertainment until 2am, including a raffle and an auction. Individual and corporate bookings are welcomed, as are any donations for the raffle and auction. This event will enable the Trust to continue to support others so we are looking forward to another fun, successful evening.
“Rachel and I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all who have supported us and the Layla Jane Pitt Remembrance Trust. They have all helped to make a huge difference to many families facing such difficult times.”
