What is the BYD SHARK?
The BYD SHARK is a ground-breaking Super Hybrid pickup.
The BYD SHARK has been designed to exude strength and confidence, taking inspiration from the shark with front-end styling that replicates a shark’s eyes. In the interior, features have been considered for journeys on rougher terrain but also offer passengers a premium cabin experience. Grab handles in the middle of the front cabin offer much-needed support on bumpy journeys, and heated and ventilated front sport seats offer comfort and a luxurious finish to this utility vehicle. Complete with BYD’s typical two-screen layout, comprised of a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, the BYD SHARK offers features that are often rare in the pickup segment.
This 5.5-metre long five-seat double cab pickup has been engineered with BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) technology and all-wheel drive dynamics. Able to offer up to 55 miles of pure-electric driving range, the BYD SHARK brings the benefits of the brand’s plug-in Super Hybrid DMO technology to a whole new segment.
How does the Dual Mode Off-Road system work?
BYD’s Dual Mode Off-Road system in the BYD SHARK DMO combines performance with efficiency, offering drivers an impressive amount of power and achieving competitive fuel consumption figures. The Dual Mode hybrid system works off two electric motors, one on the front axle offering 231PS of power and 310Nm of torque, and another at the rear producing 204PS and 340 Nm. The combined maximum system output is 436PS of power and 650Nm of torque, enough to generate a 0 to 62mph acceleration time of just 5.7 seconds, rivalling the capability of many sports cars.
The Dual Mode Off-Road powertrain has been designed in the same way as BYD’s DM-i technology, to be able to offer an EV-first driving experience. The ‘Dual Mode’ terminology refers to the ability to go between both EV and Hybrid EV driving modes, but there are four operating situations in total.
In EV Mode: The electric motors are driving the car exclusively.
In HEV Series Mode: Typically used for city driving, the petrol engine is generating electricity to power the motor or recharge the battery.
In HEV Parallel Mode: Used when harder acceleration is required, this mode allows the engine and the electric motors to work together and propel the vehicle.
In Engine Mode: For when you’re driving at a fast cruise speed, for example on the motorway, the engine can directly drive the vehicle if this is the most efficient way to maintain speed.
Even when the battery is at its lowest level, the BYD SHARK can still offer a WLTP Weighted Fuel Consumption of 29.4mpg, with the full tank and full charge figure sitting at 80.7mpg.
What are the Off-Road capabilities?
The BYD SHARK DMO can traverse rougher terrains, featuring an intelligent all-wheel drive system that manages power delivery over four different types of terrain: sand, mud, snow and gravel. The intelligent torque distribution system between the front and rear axles of the BYD SHARK also helps to support the outstanding off-road performance of this plug-in hybrid pickup.
The suspension configuration of double wishbones at the front and rear is designed to mix comfort with capability over a wide variety of surfaces, and Hill Descent Control is fitted as standard. With a ground clearance of 230mm unladen, you can rest assured that you can take on any terrain with ease.
How much can the BYD SHARK tow or carry?
The SHARK has a towing capacity of 2500kg and a maximum payload of 790kg, making it suitable for many work projects and lifestyle scenarios. The 1200-litre load bay is large enough for most types of cargo that may need to be carried as part of your work and everyday life.
Starting from £47,290, the BYD SHARK is the ultimate modern pickup. If you are looking for a hybrid utility vehicle that offers smart technology without compromising on off-road potential, the BYD SHARK is the perfect choice. Offering all-round usability and excellent load-lugging capacity, the BYD SHARK offers super comfort whilst delivering refined power.
